War Of Words: Famous Feuds Between Authors

Over the years there have been a number of intense rivalries in the world of fiction. Some amount to a scathing putdown or a pithy reply while others last for decades and lead to actual fights. We looked at some of the more famous incidents in the history of literature.
Norman Mailer and Gore Vidal
Perhaps the most infamous feud between authors is that of 20th century intellectual behemoths Norman Mailer and Gore Vidal. Mailer, had a illustrious career culminating in the Pulitzer Prize win for The Executioner’s Song. Vidal, enjoyed a long career in both non-fiction and fiction novels and even courted political office on a couple of occasions. Neither man was exactly known for holding back their opinions and when the two crossed paths it created a rivalry that produced some legendary stories.
It was Vidal who drew first blood by drawing the less than favorable comparison between Mailer’s Prisoner of Sex and “three days of menstrual flow” and the writer to serial killer Charles Manson. Mailer, in return, repaid Vidal with a head butt backstage of The Dick Cavett Show.
Six years later, their war of words turned physical once more. Mailer threw a drink at Vidal at a party before punching him square in the face. Vidal had the last laugh though. Sprawled out on the floor, he still managed to hand out of the harshest burns in literary history when he said, “Once again, words fail Norman Mailer.”
William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway
William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway are considered greats of American literature, and rightfully so. Both authors were recipients of the Pulitzer Prize and have long bibliographies full of classics. Hemingway most popular books for The Old Man And The Sea and A Farewell To Arms, while Faulkner’s highlights included As I Lay Dying and Absalom, Absalom!
Hemingway was famous for his short and deceptively simple sentences, while Faulkner wrote challenging stream-of-consciousness prose. In fact, he held the title in the Guinness Book Of Records for the longest sentence in literature. It was this difference in style that would be the source of their feud.
Faulkner, when asked to rank his contemporary writers, said of Hemingway, “He has no courage, has never crawled out on a limb. He has never been known to use a word that might cause the reader to check with a dictionary.”
Hemingway’s response was equally critical of Faulkner. “Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words? He thinks I don’t know the ten-dollar words. I know them all right. But there are older and simpler and better words, and those are the ones I use.”
These two select quotes are often repeated and have gone down in literature history. The truth is, however, that besides this back and forth, there was not much rivalry between the authors. In fact, in the interview that Faulkner was quoted in, he had just ranked Hemingway as the fourth greatest writer of his time. Ahead of the likes of John Steinbeck. Faulkner was especially full of praise for The Old Man And The Sea, a book which he described as ‘His best. Time may show it to be the best single piece of any of us, I mean his and my contemporaries.” Hemingway for his part, often referred to Faulkner as ‘the best of us all”.
Brett Easton Ellis and David Foster Wallace
One of the more controversial war of words between authors in recent times, is quite unique in that one of the authors was unable to defend himself on the account of, well, being dead.
When David Foster Wallace committed suicide at the age of 46 in 2008, there was an outpouring of tributes for the Infinite Jest author. Dave Eggers called his work “world changing” and according to Zadie Smith, he “was an actual genius”.
Not all his contemporaries were quite as complimentary. Brett Easton Ellis, the outspoken author of classics such as Less Than Zero and American Psycho, took to Twitter to lay into Foster Wallace. His rant included mockingly referring to the author as “Saint David Foster Wallace”, calling him “a fraud” that “carried around a literary pretentiousness” and referring to those that read novels of his as “Fools”.
It was quite an astonishing attack on a man that had just died and was not able to defend himself. Yet, if we dig into the archives of his essays, we can find that Foster Wallace didn’t think much of Easton Ellis either. In 1988’s Fictional Futures and the Conspicuously Young, in reference to writers like Easton Ellis he wrote, “The attitude betrayed is similar to that of lightweight neo-classicals who felt that to be non-vulgar was not just a requirement but an assurance of value, or of insecure scholars who confuse obscurity with profundity. And it’s just about as annoying.”

YA:Similar but Still Different Stories

Young adult literature (YA), or you can also use the terms like young adult book, young adult fiction, teen fiction, teen novel, etc. It seems that they are somewhat loyal to the same essence of the category. As a teenager, the main character would be, probably struggling with various stuff, when changes take place at certain point of his/her life, psychologically and physically. A tiny event, which may be considered meaningless to people not at their age, might mean the world to them. Thing can be more exaggerated in their world, which has been already changing radically. They would be embraced with unfamiliar great challenges and will step into a new era after they find a break-though.
Here you can see some interesting analogy between a teenager and a werewolf. In addition, just like the werewolf in folklore, changes ahead of young men, in both body and mind, as well as in individual and surroundings, could be vastly different among them. Even if they are forced to tackle similar problems, such like parent’s divorce, unreasonable family expectation, unfriendly schoolmates, or even an extreme fictional life of illusion just like those in The Giver, The Maze Runner or The 5th Wave, each young adult has his own war to fight. Good teenager fictions always come with a bright ending, when main characters sweep aside the dark clouds, to find his own solution, or at least, reveal some fact of the life and the world.
Although not every teenager fiction could be considered“literature”, to some extent, it mirrors what young people are interested in and what does the world around them looks like. If not “literature”, it is still a story told by those who are teenagers or, “retired” teenagers.
Then what kind of teen fiction we recommend now? Here is a list we would like to share with you.
-The Big Bangby Hans Jefferson Paglinawan
The award-winning online fiction focuses on a group of outcasts, who attempts to bomb their high school through an elaborate plan of trickery, knowledge, and mischief.
The Lotus and the Loon,by G.A. Zimmermann

She's the lurker, the lookout, the one who watches from the shadows and learns. Her partner is Roselle, the Lotus and the temptress -- tasked with seducing the king. Too bad that once the king starts chasing the Loon, Eden's role in their high-stakes mission goes from a gamble... to just plain scrambled.
-Midnight Smiles, by Nyssa Weirdo
Struggling addict, Jake, tries to escape from police and accidently breaks into a girl’s room. Surprisingly, this stupid action leads him again towards the light…  This latest romance fiction come from productive writer of Cinderella My Ass, Bad Girl Art Club and Protecting the Bad Boy.
Nicholette's Reign, by H.M. Moktadir
It is a fantasy store about Nicholette Boyojek and her beloved kingdom. The girl has just been crowned the young queen of Delladine after the mysterious death of her father. She quickly finds herself in a battle of politics with the surrounding countries and her own cabinet members. The first book of this novel has already come to the finale.

What to Read on“Read A Book Day”

September 6th. It is the National Read A Book Day! Some would possibly have no idea about this day and they could even wonder why it is necessary to have such a day. As you know, we have already the most famous World Book Day on April 23th to promote the awareness on reading, publication and copyright, and unofficially. In January, the annually National Reading Day encourages young children to read, celebrated in thousands of schools all around the United States. To remind people of the happiness of reading and family participation, Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) is a special day to celebrate the birthday of Beverly Cleary, the well-known American author of children's and young adult fiction, which is on April 12th. And, We have a August 9th for bookworms in the world to celebrate Book Lovers Day. 6 Simple But Super Effective Writing Tips

Take a look online and you can find a million and one ways to improve your writing. Everyone from classic Russian literature authors to erotica fiction writers have their own guide to being a writer. Much of the advice is easier said than done. Here are 6 simple tips that also happen to be super effective.

War And Peace Wasn’t Written In A Day
An architecture student doesn’t design a skyscraper in his first class and neither should you try to do so with your first piece of fiction. When starting to write, it’s important to start small.
Try a short story or even some flash fiction. Once you feel confident you can move onto a novella or a short novel. Eventually, you will be in a good position to write novels of any length you wish.
Get into the habit of starting and finishing a story, no matter the size. It will make it easier for you to get experience with each step of the creative process. More than that, it will also give you a sense of achievement when you finish.
You may want to write the next War And Peace, but it can take months, probably years. In the mean time, you will have nothing to show for your efforts and this can lead to anxiety and stress over time.
It is also not easy to direct and control a large novel. Think of a short story as steering a speedboat. If you need to change direction, it’s easy. Now think of a long novel as like the Titanic. It’s much bigger, harder to steer, and you are more than likely going to end up hitting an iceberg.
Start small. Get good at it. Have something to show for your efforts. Eventually you will be ready to write something bigger.

Too Many Literary Influences Can Spoil The Creative Broth
Once you have begun to write, it’s important to keep a clear vision of what you want to write and how you want to write it. With this in mind, try not to read anything too heavy while you are writing. It could influence you without you even realizing it.
Our literary influences can be stronger than we know. Sometimes their style rubs off on us without our knowledge. If you are trying to write some popular fiction books about vampires then you don’t want to be reading Anna Karenina. You might accidently turn your book into a nine hundred page allegory about the hypocrisies of the ruling class.
If you must read, then at least be careful to choose books that fit in with the style that you are going for. If you are writing some popular romance novels then reading some classics by Jane Austen won’t actually do you any harm. Who knows? It may even help.

The Early Bird Catches The Writing Bug
If you do a bit of online reading, you will find that most of your favorite authors swear by writing in the morning. It is at that time, when we first wake up, that our minds are at their freshest and most receptive to being creative.
It’s not only about writing early, but also about writing before you do anything else with your day. Everything you do, one way or another, is draining your energy and if you wait until the end of the day you may find you have no energy left to write. Remember, writing is not only about making the free time to write. It’s about being in the right frame of mind.
For most people, that is going to be first thing when they wake up before they do anything else with their day. If writing is important to you, then use this time to write.

Always Leave Something In The Creative Tank
There are few things more frustrating than having a super productive writing session only to load up your story the next day and find your mind is completely blank once again. You thought you had finally had a breakthrough. What had changed from yesterday to today?
The best way around this is to intentionally stop short at the end of a writing session. Even if you feel you could write more, don’t. Leave something in the tank. Save that for when you need to start again next time.
By waiting to write what you were going to at the end of your last session, you give yourself the chance to get started on a new session and by the time you have finished that you should have the momentum to keep going.

Get It All Down On The Page
There are few things more terrifying than staring at that blank page and to have it stare right back at you. It is known to have a Medusa like effect on writers that can last days, weeks, or even months.
That fear comes from showing too much respect. What you need to do is treat the blank page with utter disregard. Just write the story as it comes into your head. Include stuff you aren’t even sure you want in the story. If you have an idea in the moment, then bang it in there too.
Remember, you are not trying to write the final version. This is the first draft. Your objective at this point is just to get the whole story down on paper. I can’t promise any of it will read well and it will be a happy bonus if it makes sense.
I can, however, promise one thing. It’s a hell of a lot easier to edit a terrible first draft than it is to craft the perfect novel from memory. So what are you waiting for?

Take A Break Every Once And While
At some point or other, all writers get too close to what they are writing and go just a little crazy. You spend entire days rewriting the same paragraph only to end up at the same place you started. Other days you just stare blankly at an unfinished chapter. You’re dreaming about things that happen in your story. You start to see your main character in the street. It’s time to do something drastic. Take that story, lock it in a drawer, and throw away the key!
Wait. Don’t throw away the key. I got a bit carried away there, but do lock it in a drawer and don’t come back to it for at least a couple of months. It’s time you and that story took a break.
Imagine it’s like that guy or girl you really like, but you are trying not to show them. Just play it cool. You don’t need them. You’ve got other things going on in your life. Maybe you will check in on it again sometime if you have some spare time. Maybe not. No biggy.
But seriously, go away and read a bit. Work on something else. You could even just go out and enjoy yourself. You deserve it after all that writing.
When you do come back to the book a few months later, it will feel completely new. You will recognize things you didn’t before. It could be a simple typo or a big glaring plot hole. Whatever you find, you will be better off from the break and your story will be much improved.

Famous Authors Who Only Became Famous After They Died

When we think of the authors we admire most, we imagine them as having experienced successful careers and enjoyed recognition from their peers. The truth is that many of our favorite authors were not recognized or even published during their lifetime. We took a look at some famous authors who only became famous after they died.

Stieg Larsson
Lisbeth Salander may be one of the most iconic characters in modern crime literature, but we came very close to never hearing about The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo protagonist at all.
The Millennium crime series was only published after its author Stieg Larsson died of a heart attack in 2004. Larsson had enjoyed a successful career as a journalist and he only worked on the crime series in his own time after work. He wrote for his own pleasure and had never really made an effort to have his books published. When he died, the three completed manuscripts were discovered and it was not long before they were released.
As of 2015, the series have sold over 80 million copies making them some of the most popular books in recent years. It has been adapted twice; once in Sweden starring Noomi Rapace and in the US with David Fincher directing Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.
To say Steig Larsson only became known after he died is somewhat unfair, but the Millennium book series made him one of the most famous authors in the world. More than ten years after they were published you can see still people reading his books in airports, on the train and by the swimming pool or on the beach.

Franz Kafka
If you enjoy the works of Franz Kafka, then you owe a man called Max Brod a big thank you. If it was not for Brod, then classic novels such as The Trial and The Castle would have been destroyed without having ever been read.
Kafka’s influence on literature is huge. He basically invented a whole new genre of writing and his effects can still be felt today in some of the best and most innovative television shows and movies. It’s hard to imagine that he went unappreciated during his lifetime.
The Metamorphosis author lived a sad life. He had a strained relationship with his father, his brothers died when he was a child, and his sisters would be later killed in World War II. In 1917, he contracted tuberculosis and over time his condition worsened. It reached the point where it was too painful for him to eat and shortly after he died of starvation.
Most of the work that we have now come to know Kafka for were unpublished at the time of his death. He had entrusted his writing to his friend Max Brod and ordered that he destroy it all after his death. Of course, as we know, Brod ignored those wishes and instead Kafka became one of the most important fiction writers of the 20th century.

H.P. Lovecraft
These days, you can see the influence of H.P. Lovecraft everywhere from the novels of Stephen King, Guillermo Del Toro movies like Pan’s Labyrinth and Pacific Rim, and even computer games such as the Elder Scrolls and Warcraft.  During his lifetime, however, Lovecraft found himself stuck in pulp fiction and ghost writing.
Lovecraft’s The Call of Cthulhu spawned a mythos that has influenced science fiction and horror for decades. During his life, however, he struggled to support himself with his writing. To survive, he lived frugally from a family inheritance and the little he had spare he would use to send letters and submissions. In his later life, he separated from his wife and moved in with an elderly aunt.
Lovecraft died after a short battle with cancer in 1937 and it was not until the sixties that the horror master began to get the credit he deserved. He may not have lived to see how popular his work became, but we like to think that he is somewhere with The Great Old Ones watching our world.

John Kennedy Toole
It was a bittersweet moment when A Confederacy of Dunces won the Pulitzer Prize in 1981. That was because twelve years prior to the awards win, the author John Kennedy Toole had committed suicide.
The book told the story of Ignatius J. Reilly, a modern day Don Quixote who goes on a journey through the underside of New Orleans. Reilly and those he came across were the ultimate outsiders and Toole was an outlier much like the characters he created.
He wrote two novels in his lifetime. The aforementioned A Confederacy Of Dunces and The Neon Bible, which would be published later after the success of his first novel. While he was alive, however, it was the failure to get his work published that saw Toole slip into a state of paranoia and depression that eventually drove him to suicide at the age of 31.

Fan Fiction: That’s the Way I Love Movies

The rapid growth of internet opens up fantastic space for passionate fans of hit movies, TV dramas, anime/manga and novels to create their own stories based on the original creation and share them with friends with the same taste. Especially when social media dominates the ways that people interact with others, it is highly encouraging when writers can receive comments, likes and shares, which would fuel more creative updates. That is how fan fiction, or, fanfic, develop so fast.

Furthermore, it could be a greenhouse for new era indie original writers. You will not be too surprised when an online novel writer reviewed that he/she used to be an enthusiastic fanfic writer before becoming original authors.

You can classify fan fiction into a separated genre, just like lots of websites of free online novels do. In fact, it covers all other genres at the same time. A fan fiction can be popular romance novel, free science fiction, a fantasy story or a crime thriller. It all depends on how the writer want to develop the plot and deliver his/her thought to the reader, or perhaps, friends. What is more important? It can be totally different with the original, which is exactly the irresistible charm of a fan fiction.

Generally speaking, you can put fan fictions into three categories. Some loyal writers remain committed to original works to the utmost extent, who purely emphasize and strengthen certain details told or untold in the original works. Some writers show a particular preference for slightly different story, in which they can match up different couples or add new story lines or characters for new adventure and romance, while still seeking a harmony of original spirit and new imagination. And, there are some free-style writers who are indulged in creating fictions in an “almost-original” way. I mean, this kind of creation features completely different universe and storyline, bearing only the existed name of characters and their respective settings specified and implied by the original authors. In other words, if you ignore the names of characters, you will find a real novel that you actually had never read before.

Putting aside of controversy in possible infringement on original author’s copyright for the moment, fan fiction is a positive reflection of fans’ love and affection on the original works. That’s the way how fans engage themselves in the dreamy world of the original works, let alone the possible publicity effect.

Fan fiction is an interesting kind of literature, if you don’t might I use the word “literature”. Although it is not too tough for a writing rookie to start writing a novel based on successful titles like Harry Potter, you could always find serious and good plots created by fan fiction writers. Some of them can really considered as high quality literature.

Now, you are ready to click in some site to discover a fan fiction related to some of your favorite titles, aren’t you? If yes, here are some popular and emerging sites for online novels created by fans.

Most Popular Species in Fictional Novels

If you are free online fiction lover, it would be not difficult for you to find out that some genres are relatedly popular among all fictional works, for example, romance, mystery/crime, or fantasy. In fact, just take a look at all forms of literature, you will see that there is an interesting topic might be useful for new writers: species that characters in a novel belong to.
One of the most fascinating incentive for fiction writers are the power they could use to set free bold and unrestrained idea free, when they can create some characters that do not exist in real world. Some genres are frequently used throughout the history of literature. You can develop your stories based on these species, or, you certainly can create a brand-new one at your will. Just see how many wonderful creatures J. K. Rowling has shown you.
The funny thing is that, generally speaking, you can divide these species of characters into three categories.

The Dead: A lot of characters could be related to death, including vampire, zombie and ghost.
As in European folklore, vampire is a kind of immortal creature feeding on blood, and its name firstly appeared in 1734.
